ABSTRACT

As most research on risk factors and prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been carried out in men, especially in men below age 65, our knowledge about the female risk factor profile is unsatisfactory (Eaker, Chesebro, Sacks, Wenger, & Whisnant, 1993; Higgins, 1990; Wenger, Chapter 1, this volume; Wenger, Speroff, & Packard, 1993). Our knowledge about traditional risk factors in women mainly stems from studies like the Framingham Study, the Gothenburg Study, the MONICA study and other population-based longitudinal studies (Eaker, Pinsky, & Castelli, 1992; Johansson, 1983; Tunstall-Pedoe et al., 1994).
