ABSTRACT
The editors engage in an annual ritual with doctoral students. “What,” the students ask, “is the value of doing all this research?” As one example, we point them toward a body of recent work, most prominently identified with a single scholar. “Not only did the author open this new area of research, but she changed U.S. government legislation and influenced corporate policy worldwide.” Just one instance; not bad.
