ABSTRACT

Studies have shown that a high percentage of people diagnosed with a serious mental illness consider spirituality to be an important aspect of their lives. Recently, increased attention has been given to the role of spirituality as a key aspect of mental health recovery. Lacking are clearly established guidelines to direct practitioners who wish to address the topic in practice. As a result, some clients may not be receiving adequate support. The goal of this inquiry is to address this gap by compiling information about best practices for helping clients diagnosed with a serious mental illness utilize spirituality as a recovery tool. A total of eight best practices are identified.
