ABSTRACT

Gestational Neurohormonal Theory“Sexual orientation in al mammals is primarily determined by the degree to which the nervous system is exposed to testosterone and certain other sex hormones while neuro-organization is taking place, and hormonal and neurological variables, operating during gestation are the main determinants of sexual orientation.” Neuro-organization refers to the development of the brain and nervous system. This was the hypothesis put forward by Ellis and Ames in their 1987 article titled “Neurohormonal Functioning and Sexual Orientation: A Theory of Homosexuality-Heterosexuality” (p. 251). The article was the result of an extensive search of the scientific literature prior to 1987 concerning the biological basis of sexuality. They put forth a theory of human sexuality development referred to as the gestational neurohormonal theory, which I shall refer to as simply the neurohormonal theory. They also presented the following predictions regarding homosexuality based on their theory:

1. Homosexuals should have higher frequencies of sex-typical behaviors normally associated with the opposite sex.
