It is surely a truism to say that the second half of the twentieth century has been marked by swift and deep transformations in the economic, political and cultural fields which have brought about new requirements to be fulfilled by those who wish to participate in society as full citizens and to share the socially generated wealth and knowledge, finding a place in the professional world.
