ABSTRACT

The place of cultures and cultural differences in today’s world is high on the social agenda. The issues come into clear focus in education where students from differing cultural backgrounds mix together every day, where they join in a common learning exercise and where their attitudes towards each other and their cultural background are being formed. Defining and developing education for a multicultural world are identified as the central challenges for educational planning for the twenty-first century in the conclusion of the Delors Report Learning: The Treasure Within (1996). As part of this concern, this chapter will look at the place of linguistic diversity and language policy, with special reference to the African context.
