ABSTRACT
It is a truism that books are products of their times. Each is written in accord with the purposes and beliefs of the day, and as those change so does the nature of the books. That applies to this book as to any other. It could not, for instance, have been written in 1969, the year I turned to formal research on learning after a decade of school teaching.
