ABSTRACT

The death of Franco in 1975 marked the beginning of a period of political uncertainty in Spain. It was obvious that Spain could not continue as an authoritarian regime, and the debate centered on the means by which political changes should be introduced to bring Spain into line with the democracies of Western Europe. However, if the Spanish political situation constituted an anomaly in the Western European panorama, the same was true of its media system. Therefore, some important changes had to take place in the media system, not only due to the appearance of new media, but above all as a necessity to overcome a very sui generissituation.
