ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a course for inservice Israeli elementary school teachers that aims to improve their pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics. The recognition that pedagogical content knowledge is an important characteristic of teacher knowledge is growing fast. Shulman (1986) describes this kind of knowledge as: knowing the ways of representing and formulating the subject matter that makes it comprehensible to others; understanding what makes the learning of specific topics easy or difficult; and knowing the conceptions and preconceptions that students of different ages and backgrounds bring with them to the learning situation.
