ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces you to the subject of design and technology. For many people, this was a new subject that had not been in the school curriculum prior to the introduction of the National Curriculum. Its introduction raised many fears in teachers in primary schools. In reality, many of the activities involved in design and technology were already in place in craft, art and science lessons. The subject required a shift in emphasis, presentation and control by the teacher. The teacher became more of an enabler, allowing children to express their ideas in a non-threatening environment. This chapter sets out to show you that there is much that is familiar about technology.
