ABSTRACT

This volume offers a selection of papers presented at the first European Conference on Research in Science Education held at the University of Leeds April 7-11, 1995. The conference was organized jointly by the University of Leeds and King’s College, University of London and sponsored by the British Council, Leeds City Council, the Nuffield Foundation, Taylor and Francis (Publishers), the Wellcome Centre for Medical Science and the Association for Science Education. Over five busy days more than 160 participants were treated to 126 presentations through papers, poster sessions and symposia. This conference provided the opportunity for the first meeting of the embryonic European Science Education Research Association. In two specially convened sessions the Constitution was developed, amended and approved and the first officers of the Association, including the President, Professor Dimitris Psillos, University of Thessaloniki, and secretary, Dr Philip Adey, King’s College London, were elected. In addition to the working programme of the conference, three receptions were provided by Taylor and Francis, the British Council and Leeds City Council and other social occasions provided a valuable opportunity to meet colleagues and discuss current issues in science education.
