ABSTRACT

Teachers’ narratives allow us to grasp some crucial aspects of teaching viewed from a gender aspect. This chapter is based on recollections of professional events in the lives of retired teachers which serve as vivid examples of the role gender plays in their professional lives. Forty-three retired teachers participated in a study of the transformation of experience into professional wisdom and the role of memory in this process. The participating teachers were asked for accounts of their former practice. Retired teachers could look back over many years of practice and their recollections of past events provide a view of changing educational situations. (Ben-Peretz, 1995). In the following parts of this chapter some of these recalled episodes are analysed from a gender viewpoint.
