ABSTRACT

The answer to all these questions depends on how we define the concept of teaching as a profession. Quite clearly, this concept has no unequivocal meaning, and it has been used by different groups to achieve different aims. The concept of (teaching as a) profession is, rather, a buzzword and a tool that has been used in attempts to create legitimacy for different developments. In a setting where the concept of teaching as a profession is so ambiguous, it is uncertain whether and how it should be used.
