ABSTRACT

In April 1994 James S.Coleman was the first scholar to receive the Phoenix Prize from the Social Sciences Division of the University of Chicago in recognition of his career achievements in expanding the research horizons of the social sciences. The presentation of the award was followed by a two-day conference on his work. ‘A Vision for Sociology’—part retrospect, part prospect—was Jim Coleman's response to the award of the Phoenix Prize, and brings the main part of this volume to a conclusion. It is immediately followed by a slightly revised version of Robert K.Merton's presentation at the Phoenix Prize conference, entitled ‘Teaching James Coleman’.
