ABSTRACT

Setting Up The information that candidates for the post of project manager or ‘animateur’ (See Chapters 1 and 2) received included a description of the basic tenets of the Schools Make a Difference (SMAD) project based on research on school effectiveness and school improvement. These nine ‘guiding principles’ were drawn up in consultation with the headteachers. They were that:

1 Students need to believe that schooling can be worthwhile and a relevant experience, and that they understand the logic of learning and receive frequent and specific feedback on their progress. Ways of relating to students should be consistent.
