ABSTRACT

In this chapter we recognize that much of what is said will also apply to Key Stage 1 (5-7 years). It is, therefore, essential that coordinators working at Key Stage 2 make themselves aware of work at Key Stage 1 and earlier so that they can promote progression within science. Our focus will be upon those things which are most pertinent to the management and implementation of science in the later primary years. Emphasis is placed upon questions relating to the delivery of a science curriculum which ensures that continuity and progression is achieved across and between the phases of primary education and which is consistent with a balanced and rigorous approach to the whole curriculum. This progression, built firmly on Key Stage 1, is we feel, the essence of education at Key Stage 2.
