ABSTRACT
David Owen was a member of the National Curriculum Working Party on Mathematics. He is here discussing the National Curriculum in mathematics and setting out his views on how it should be monitored and its effects assessed. David describes his fears concerning possible directions in which strict adherence to an over-rigid model of the National Curriculum could take us. He also mentions the role of parents and the wider community in helping teachers to interrogate their own practice and explore its effectivity.
