ABSTRACT

As Benjamin Franklin wrote (probably drawing upon a proverbial expression), ‘in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes’. Schooling should be added to these two inevitabilities since parents enroll their children in school with the same resignation as they file tax returns, and students’ disaffection with schools is legendary. Lucky children have one or two good teachers during their schooling.1 As we enroll our children and bring them to school, we must do more than what a school principal recalls her mother telling her, ‘I left you at the door and prayed you’d be educated.’2
