ABSTRACT

In this age of high technology, there are many prophets with breathtaking visions of a very different future for postsecondary education. They foresee empowered learners with ready and inexpensive access to a huge array of learning materials in all sorts of media pursuing learning opportunities throughout their lives. In their future, both formal and informal education take place in all sorts of institutions, public and private, and the relatively autonomous student is in charge of his or her learning.
