Managing active student learning with a virtual learning environment

Staffordshire University is committed to providing the best learning experience it can for its students. This commitment is called ‘building the learning community’ (BLC). One goal of BLC is to shift the learning environment from an information transmission/teacher focus to one which is learner focused. Through BLC, greater flexibility in learning provision via a variety of technologies is offered. This chapter discusses the rationale behind BLC and addresses fundamental staff development concerns.
