ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the use of virtual learning environments as a means of providing quality learning and teaching. We begin by defining what we mean by a virtual learning environment and explaining how it mirrors the traditional or face to face university with which we are all familiar. Drawing on research, as well as our own workshops with lecturers and staff developers, we consider the effect that this method of working may have on learning and teaching. We also consider some of the concerns that people working in educational institutions might have about the impact of these changes on their own working practices. We do this by providing a discussion based on seven key questions:

1. What is a virtual learning environment? 2. Who is the teacher and who is the learner? 3. What then happens to the role of the lecturer? 4. When will they study and when will I teach? 5. Where will all this take place? 6. Why change the way we work now? 7. What will it cost and what is the damage?
