ABSTRACT

The darker view is that the core values of the industrial society will penetrate more deeply into companies, educational organizations and individuals. Increasing bureaucratization, in the form of complex detailed procedures, will permeate healthcare systems and MDV education. Codes of practice, manuals of quality assurance and programme specifications will limit the freedom of MDVs, MDV teachers and MDV students. De-skilling, perhaps proletariatization of professional groups will occur (Halsey, 1992). Large private international companies will strengthen further their grip on research agendas, the healthcare provided and perhaps the curriculum. The drive for profits will lead to shortterm contracts for organizations and individuals. Control and conformity will be the agenda, not freedom to learn.
