ABSTRACT

This is a problem for all healthcare professionals. A particular problem for vets is that of euthanasia. To advise someone that their cherished pet is suffering to the point that recovery is unlikely and that the animal should be ‘put down’ can be a very demanding not to say distressing task for both parties (Turner, 1985). To advise farmers that one or more of their animals should be destroyed has implications of severe financial losses (in addition to the veterinary bill).
