ABSTRACT

This case study explores the issue of how an institution provides support for students whose background or circumstances have not prepared them for higher education.

Background

Juan and Selena are the children of Mexican-American agricultural workers in the Salinas Valley of California USA. Higher education typically had not been an option for them because of their background and circumstances. California State University Monterey Bay, founded in 1995, is committed to serving the under-served and low-income populations of California through programmes using new pedagogical approaches and infused by technology. The university has employed faculty and staff committed to this vision.
