ABSTRACT

The issue addressed in this case is how a learning assistance support person can enter a difficult academic environment and develop relationships with teachers to effect change.

Background

The case took place in the School of Engineering of a rural campus of Monash University in Australia. The institution had evolved from a college of advanced education, to a university college and finally to a campus of an established university. The campus’s rural setting enabled small class sizes and a more personal approach to university life. The case reporter was involved in supporting a group of engineering academics concerned about the effectiveness of their teaching and student learning.
