ABSTRACT
A major force in the 1990s in all age ranges and sectors of education was the desire to improve standards. Educational provision from playgroups and nursery schools to degree courses is now subject to a series of inspection systems where targets are set and monitored and league tables and reports are produced that show comparative levels of achievement between providers at every stage.
