The Universal Declaration of The Rights of AIDS and HIV Patients, drawn up by Aides and Médecins du Monde, states: persons infected with the virus are protected by common law. No special legislation may apply to them (para. 2); persons infected with the virus must have unrestricted access to care (para. 3); the freedom or rights of persons shall not be restricted for the sole reason that they are infected with the virus, whatever their race, nationality, religion, sex or sexual orientation (para. 5); and under no circumstances may an individual be screened for the virus without his knowledge (para. 8).
