ABSTRACT

Now notice how the sentences are written. I shall now explain the new sounds that occur in them. I shall also explain the meanings of new words.

1. ti,,"'" is of course the English word 'teacher', adapted to the UrdulHindi sound system-and adapted so thoroughly that none of its sounds are exactly like those of its English originaL UrdulHindi speakers hear our '(' as being more like a retroflex than a dental Csee pp. 13-14 above), and when they take an English word into UrdulHindi Cas they often do) will pronounce it accordingly. In fact most of them who learnt their English in South Asia or as adults in Britain speak English words with this pronunciation when they are speaking English-just as most English people tend to use their pronunciation for other languages too. UrdwHindi speakers have far more excuse than we do for using the sounds of their own language when speaking other languages. Those of them who have learnt English in their own country have very rarely had the opportunity to learn it from mother-tongue speakers of English: they have learnt it from teachers who pronounce it as they do.
