ABSTRACT

The chute(s) is a vertical pipe running from top to bottom of the building and, basically, on each fl oor there is a hopper which opens into it. The chute(s) discharges into storage containers in specially constructed chambers at or near to ground level. Chutes need to be well designed and planned to prevent fi re risk and to minimise blockages and the possibility of dust, smell and noise inside the building. The chute is convenient to the householder and will take most of the refuse, leaving little to be carried downstairs. The task of the L.A. is simplifi ed because they can collect the refuse from a number of fl ats at one point. Regarded as a less unsatisfactory system for high density dwellings.
