Institutionalized Discrimination against Japan-born Korean Athletes: From Overt to Covert Discrimination

Discrimination, the unfavourable treatment of a person or a group, is not a new phenomenon. Social problems exist in most societies, including Japan. Japanese society was an exclusive, simple-ethnic stock and a homogeneous society until the turn of the twentieth century. A recent increase of foreign labour from Southeast Asian, South American, and Middle-Eastern countries has made Japan an increasingly multi-ethnic society.
