ABSTRACT

Politics and diplomacy are among the oldest of human activities.2 Politics may be briefly defined as matters concerning the state or its government, or public affairs generally.3 Diplomacy is the management of international relations.4 Once people started to live together in groups, diversities in culture, religion, ideology, economy and social system resulted. Global diversity is thus a universal feature and political and diplomatic activities are two means of creating and accommodating conflict resulting from this diversity.5 Both involve disagreements and the resolution of those disagreements. The essence of many political and diplomatic situations remain that of conflict and the resolution of conflict.6 Military confrontation and summit conferences are, of course, two ways of solving conflicts. However, sport can also be a powerful means of achieving and perpetuating both confrontation and conflict resolution.
