ABSTRACT

In his 1926 chapter, From Doorstep to Living Room, Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) published Le Corbusier's recently completed Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau next to Fra Angelico's Annunciation of 1445. He captioned the image of the Pavillon with the text as:

“Latter-day classicism”. A brilliant example of the affinity of the home interior and garden. Is it a hall, beautifully open to the exterior and taking its dominating character from the trees, or is it a garden built into the house, a garden room?
