ABSTRACT
Studies of nationalism in Europe tend to see nationalism as opposed to religion. It is conceived as part of the process of secularization and modernization, which is in harmony with science and rationality, while religion is not. As nationalism grew and became a collective phenomenon, religion declined and became privatized.
