ABSTRACT

In 1976 St Philip’s Catholic Boy’s Grammar School became the first Sixth Form College (i.e., a college for students between the ages of 16 and 18) in the city and until now the only one in the diocese of Birmingham, with the approval of and under the trusteeship of the Oratory Fathers, Birmingham. The college continued to operate on the site of the old grammar school on land held in trust by the Oratory Fathers next to the Oratory. From that date up until 1987 the college received students from the Catholic feeder schools in Birmingham and an increasing number of students from other Birmingham secondary schools. The student intake began to represent the cultural and faith diversity found within the inner city and suburbs of Birmingham.
