ABSTRACT
Now the explanation of the lineage of Agni will be given. (225b) You should know that when the Bhagavat was formerly engaged in the Bodhisattva practice, the Bhagavat himself taught the virtuous instructions that appear in the Tirthika scriptures, such as, ‘You should not kill creatures apart from doing so as offerings (ball) to the gods’. The explanations about Agni in the Vedas of the Brahmins were also taught in order to reduce the amount of slaughter of creatures among the trthikas and so forth, who being disposed to perversity, engage in such evil deeds. How is that known to be so? Because as it says in the Noble MaỆjuśn Tantr’, ‘Even that with a small amount of truth was taught by me.’
