ABSTRACT

According to Guthrie Western Savanna consists of eight groupings, namely ChokweLuchazi (K10, Zaire, Angola, Zambia), Lozi (K20, Zambia, Namibia), Luyana (K30, Angola, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana) and Subiya (K40, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana) on the one hand as well as UMbundu and Ndonga (R10, 20, Angola, Namibia), Herero and Yeyi (R30, 40, Namibia, Botswana) on the other. Languages considered here comprise UMbundu (R11, Schadeberg 1990), Ndonga (R22, Fivaz 1986) as one of several Wambo languages, and Yeyi (R41, Gowlett 1992, Sommer 1995; for Herero, R31, see Ch 29). Furthermore, data on Mbukushu (K43, Fisch 1977), Gciriku (K38b, Möhlig 1967), Kwangari (K33, Dammann 1957), Lucazi (K13, Fleisch 2000), Luyana (K31, Givón 1970b) and Luvale (K14, Horton 1949) are also taken into account.
