ABSTRACT

Camel, Battle of the Battle fought near al-Basra (q.v.) between 'Ā'isha bint Abī Bakr (q.v.), Talha b. 'Ubaydullāh alTaymi (q.v.) and al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwām (q.v.) on the one hand, and the forces of 'Alī b. Abī Tālib (q.v.) on the other. It took place in 36/656. The forces of 'Ā'isha were defeated; Talha and, later, al-Zubayr, were killed and 'Ā'isha was taken prisoner though accorded enormous reverence as a wife of the Prophet Muhammad, and later sent back to Medina (q.v.). The battle was so-called because of the camel which 'Ā'isha rode during it.
