ABSTRACT

Hārūn b. 'Imrān The Aaron of the Qur'ān. Here Hārūn is portrayed as an associate and brother of Mūsā (q.v.) who stands beside him before Pharaoh. At one point Mūsā scolds Hārūn because of the calf worship which has taken place in Mūsā's absence. The death of Hārūn attracted the attention of later Muslim commentators who wove much legend around the event. (See Fir'awn; Sūrat al-A'rāf; Sūrat Tāhā. )

Hārūt and Mārūt Two angels mentioned in v. 102 of Sūrat alBaqara (q.v.) who either taught men sorcery or how to avoid sorcery. Commentators further explain that they came to earth, having accepted God's challenge to behave better than sinful man. However, they committed murder and fornication and, choosing to make reparation on earth, they were imprisoned and tormented in a Babylonian well.
