ABSTRACT

Qāf (Ar.) The title of the 50th sūra of the Qur'ān; qāf is one of the letters of the Arabic alphabet. The sura belongs to the Meccan period and contains 45 verses. Its tide is drawn from the first letter of v.l, the whole of which reads: 'Qāf, by the Glorious Qur'ān'. The sura retails some of God's blessings and mentions various peoples to whom God has sent His messengers. Hell awaits the sinners and Paradise the pious. In a famous statement in v.16, which underlines His immanence, God declares that He is nearer to man than the latter's jugular vein. {See al-Janna; Mysterious Letters of the Qur'ān; al-Nār.)

Qāf, Mount A mountain range in Islamic cosmology which circles the whole earth.
