ABSTRACT

Shī'ite Anglicized form of the Arabic word shī'ī meaning a member of the Shī'a (q.v.) branch of Islam. Shīrz Major historic city of South West Iran, famous both for its Islamic architecture and late mediaeval school of miniature painting. Shrāz was also the home of two of Iran's greatest poets, Sa'dī (died 690/1291) and Hāfiz (c. 720/1320-792/1390). In the mid and later 12th/ 18th century Shrāz also became a Zand tribal capital for a period. (See Isfahān; Safavids.) al-Shīrāzī See Mulla Sadra.
