ABSTRACT

The forward motion of the arm and shoulder girdle becomes clear through the activity of the M.pectoralis major, M.latissimus dorsi and M.biceps brachii with the latter very active half-way through the swing movement and ending with a dynamic contraction of M.triceps brachii prior to ball impact and beyond. In other words, the M. triceps and all forearm and wrist extensors continue their activity in the full extension range of the arm movement. These extensors have to be activated to counteract the wrist flexion torque caused by the finger tendons, as demonstrated by Snijders et al. (1987). They work in harmony with the upper arm extensors and the M. latissimus dorsi and the other shoulder rotators (Basmajian and De Luca, 1985; Clarys and Cabri, 1993).
