ABSTRACT

According to Manuel Castells, the emerging network society is characterized by the globalization of economic activities and a new, shared culture emergent in the global media.1 However, in reaction and opposition to the force of globalization, powerful expressions of diverse “local” identity are also emerging, and many minority and indigenous communities are turning to information technology (IT) as a means of cultural preservation.2 The global networks are at once channels for globalizing infl uences and instruments of resistance against those infl uences.
