ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the religious system known as Santería and the implications for the psychological healing process upon the worldviews of its practitioners. While we review the relevant yet sparse literature in relation to the contemporary practice of Santería, much of the information provided herein is based on our own travels to Cuba and the observation of and participation in religious ceremonies, as well as consultations in both Cuba and the United States. In addition, we present qualitative data on the views of psychological health and utilization of resources for psychological issues from the viewpoints of both healers and practitioners. Our intent is to familiarize the reader with the growing practice of Santería in Latina/o communities and facilitate understanding of the psychological healing process that occurs within Santería in which Babalawos and Santeras/os serve as psychological healers.
