ABSTRACT

Chen is a 72-year-old Chinese American who speaks fluent Mandarin and English, but prefers to speak Mandarin with his friends and family. As a young man, he emigrated from his homeland of Taiwan to the United States to pursue his master’s degree in chemistry. Three years ago, after many years of service at a local university, he retired from his post as a senior research lab technician. Since his retirement, Chen has struggled to occupy his free time. He currently lives with his wife in their family home, close to the households of his two adult married sons. The elder son has two children, ages 1 and 3, but Chen and his wife have spent little time with their grandchildren.
