ABSTRACT

Climate change is expected to affect the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including droughts. This chapter reviews the current understanding of possible impacts of climate change on water resources, with emphasis on the frequency and intensity of droughts. The chapter also reviews possible means to mitigate the effects of droughts. Results from recent research on drought effects are presented to examine the effi ciency of alternative mitigation strategies. Findings indicate that use of long-term weather forecasts, coupled with improved management practices, may offset some of the adverse consequences of more frequent and/or more intense droughts.
