ABSTRACT

Sustainable tourism is a form of development that focuses on the linkages between/amongst environmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects in order to attain sustainability (UNEP, 2001). Sustainable tourism development is as a long-term strategy, which is carried out continuously over time without diminishing the cultural and environmental values of destinations for the present and future generations. On the other hand, short-term goals in tourism development are generally profit-oriented with very little or no consideration of the welfare of the host community and the environment (Choi & Sirakaya, 2006; Hall & Lew 1998; Holden, 2008).
