1697 Treaty of Ryswick (30 Sep.)

Treaty which brought to an end the fi rst phase of hostilities with Louis XIV’s France, begun in 1689, known as King William’s War or the Nine Years’ War. Major terms: mutual restoration of conquests between France and Great Britain; William III acknowledged as monarch and Anne as his successor, but without the explicit repudiation or expulsion from France of James II.
