ABSTRACT

To commemorate its centennial in 1985 the AEA undertook and/or sponsored a variety of activities. From the historian of economics' standpoint by far the most interesting of these, both for its symbolic and its actual value, was the Executive Committee's decision to commission five articles “concerning the history of economics in the United States.” The authors were selected by a distinguished panel of economists: George J. Stigler; Moses Abramovitz; and Charles Kindelberger, all ex-Presidents, and the results were duly published in December 1985 as part of a special Supplement to the AEA, which also contained the latest Directory of Members. 1
