ABSTRACT

Conventional weapons are not formally recognised as a distinct category under the law of armed conflict. Within the framework of UN initiatives on conventional disarmament, their definition is negatively expressed: it is understood to mean all weapons other than weapons of mass destruction.1 The latter ‘include atomic explosive weapons, radio-active material weapons, lethal chemical and biological weapons’.2
