ABSTRACT

Visible light is a small part of the continuous spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, most of which is not directly observable, and, indeed, was unknown until the 19th century. The visible spectrum extends from red to violet-the colors of the rainbow. They were originally classifi ed as

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. (R-O-Y-G-B-I-V). Below the visible spectrum is infrared radiation and above violet are ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays. Indigo is no longer recognized as a color of the spectrum so the I is no longer used. Whereas once students memorized it as Roy G. Biv, Roy has lost the vowel in his last name and we are now stuck with Roy G. Bv.
